The Aggies Family Biking Event promotes cycling safety and guidance with bike repair, held at the EH&S building on 1620 Standley Drive.

“A majority of people who get a bike, but don’t know much about them, will stop riding entirely when they get a flat tire,” project coordinator Jamie Lakey said. “The Outdoor Recreation Program on campus is going to teach riders how to use the Fix-It station and how to replace tubes on their tires.”

Aggie Transit will teach riders how to mount their bikes for effective on campus travel.

The Las Cruces Codes Enforecement will have a course for kids on how to turn and ride safely.

“Education is not only needed for the riders, but the drivers and pedestrians as well,” Lakey said. “I have spoken to many people and some still do not even know what it means to share the road. Being able to promote healthy and safe biking and driving practices so that the campus and the city is safer and enjoyable place for walking, biking and driving is not only our mission, but our passion.”

Southern New Mexico Bike Educators will teach the younger riders how to fasten their helmets. The Department of Health has donated 20 helmets to this event; the first 20 kids will get free helmets.

“We encourage them to bring their bikes, helmets and any safety gear they may have, even if you have a flat tire,” Lakey said.

Safe Routes to School is providing their bike blender, encouraging participants to pedal on for a delicious post-ride treat. Minions and Storm Troopers, as well as Libby the Police Dog and Pistol Pete will be in attendance. Aggie Express will be providing ice cream for riders and parents to enjoy.
