“My work with the League of United Latin American Citizens started 20 years ago as a first in family undergrad,” said Garcia. “LULAC awarded me a scholarship that allowed me to purchase my books and pay tuition. Since that time, I have served LULAC as president of local councils, national vice president for young adults and New Mexico District Two director.”

Garcia has been working for the university for about seven years. His job allows him to collaborate with financial and community stakeholders in providing quality learning opportunities for individuals in the diverse communities that NMSU serves.

In his new position as state director, Garcia will work with LULAC councils under his administration to advance the educational opportunities for Latinos in New Mexico and in the NMSU system.

LULAC was founded in 1929 and is currently the largest national Latino organization in the U.S. Its mission is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the nation’s Hispanic population.

“My selection as New Mexico LULAC State Director is an honor and a dream of mine to give back to my community,” said Garcia. “Education has allowed me many opportunities and successes. As director of state LULAC I will strive to create programs and scholarships that help New Mexico students realize educational goals.”

Garcia has twice been awarded National Educator of the Year at LULAC’s national conference and has served twice as the co-chair of the National Education Committees.
