Jones is the author of many books, including "Elegy for the Southern Drawl," "Things That Happen Once," "Apocalyptic and Other Poems" and "Transparent Gestures." His poetry has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, The Best American Poetry, Double Take, Grand Street, The Paris Review and more.
His awards include the 1990 National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters Jean Stein Award for Poetry and the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing and Guggenheim fellowships.
"Things That Happen Once" was named to the Best Books of 1996 list by Publishers Weekly and was a finalist in 1997 for the Los Angeles Times Book Award.
Jones, of Carbondale, Ill., is a graduate of the University of Alabama and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has been called one of the best poets and consistent voices of his generation.
Also scheduled to read Friday is English graduate student Becky Hagenston. Her book, "A Gram of Mars," won the Great Lakes New Writers Award. Hagenston will read from her thesis.
