Civil engineer to evaluate effectiveness of water disinfection treatments


As in other arid and semiarid parts of the world, water is a precious commodity in the southwestern United States. New Mexico State University civil engineering Assistant Professor Yanyan Zhang is working to evaluate if commonly used disinfection processes are effective in keeping the water supply pathogen-free and safe. Zhang recently received a three-year National Institutes of Health grant for this purpose.

NMSU women’s basketball team to host Denver, UNM this week

The NMSU women’s basketball team will have a two-game home stand this week. The Aggies will take on the University of Denver at 6 p.m. tonight at the Pan American Center. The first 250 fans will receive a free Aggies hat. The Aggies will then host the University of New Mexico in the Battle of I-25 at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, also at the Pan American Center. After the game, fans will be able to get postgame autographs from the team. Tickets are available at the Pan American ticket office or by calling 575-646-1420.

NMSU union meeting to be held Thursday

NMSU’s Local 2393 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees invites all bargaining-unit employees to attend the monthly meeting to keep up with union activities and issues. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month, and the next gathering will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the AFSCME union hall, 138 S. Downtown Mall, Suite D, next to White’s Music Box. The union hall entrance is on the Water Street side of the building and the parking lot is on the east side of Water Street, close to the south end of Main Street. KRWG's 'Tamale Confidential' to air Thursday

Learn how to make delicious tamales this holiday season on KRWG Public Media’s "Tamale Confidential" on 90.7 FM and https://www.krwg.org at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13. Hosted by Edmundo Resendez, the show will feature tamale expert and aficionado Juan Morales, president of the Santa Fe Grill (inside of Pic Quick). Morales will share his grandmother’s tamale recipe and tips for making great tamales.

The show will be live-streamed on KRWG's Facebook page so viewers can see the tamale experts make the tamales live. All calls and social media questions will be entered into a drawing to win either a $25 gift card courtesy of Save Mart to make your own tamales or a $25 gift card from the Santa Fe Grill, which is selling tamales at their various locations (inside of Pic Quick).

Annual Winter Parade at NMSU set for Saturday

Please join the NMSU Fire Department and Housing & Residential Life for their 18th annual Winter Parade from 5:15 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. The parade starts at 5:15 p.m. at the NMSU Fire Station and goes through Student Family Housing. The parade will end at the South Campus Community Center around 7:15 pm. There will be activities from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Community Center, including crafts, hot chocolate and cookies and photos with Santa after the parade. Bring your letters to Santa and don’t forget to dress warm. The Community Center is located at 1410 Center Drive behind the South Office Complex.

Human Resource Services to be closed from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 20

NMSU Human Resource Services will be closed from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 20 for its annual holiday luncheon. HR Services will respond to messages after the luncheon.

'Online Instructor Support and Observation Tools' workshop planned for Jan. 22

Join presenters Dennis Giever (criminal justice), Jennifer Frey (fish, wildlife and conservation ecology) and Sandra Johnson (online course improvement program) for a discussion focused on guidelines for teaching online as well as sharing observation/evaluation tools for online instructors. The presentation will be of interest to deans, department heads, supervisors and online instructors who are involved in online education for NMSU.

Join us in the discussion of expectations of online teaching based on best principles of instruction as well as sharing of quick and easy tools for support, observation and feedback for online teachers. Lunch will be served.

The presentation is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, in Milton Hall, Room 85.
