One of the best ways to welcome and start the New Year is to be safe and have a great time. The New Mexico State University Fire Department would like to remind you of a few safety tips you should follow while you are out celebrating the New Year.

If you are going out:
· Do not go out alone, have a close friend go out with you. Use the buddy system when you leave and return.
· If you drink, before going out, assign a designated driver.
· Do not leave your drink unattended.
· Make sure to have your valuables in a safe place.
· Create a meeting time and spot for your friends in case you get split up.
· Auto accidents due to alcohol consumption are highest between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., so avoid being on the road at those times.

If you are staying in and celebrating:
· Be sure all smoke alarms and monoxide detectors are working and have batteries.
· If you or your guests choose to drink, please do so responsibly.
· Have phone numbers at hand for a cab company, emergency contacts and poison control if something unexpected occurs.
· Have guests turn in their keys to you upon arrival.
· Have two colors of cups: one for adult beverages and one for non-alcoholic ones.
· Have a variety of non-alcoholic beverages and plenty of water for your guests.
· Be prepared to let your guests stay the night as an alternative to them driving home after drinking.
· Be respectful of your neighbors.

Be safe and have a great New Year.
