Expert Background

Known by many as the “Chileman,” Paul Bosland is widely considered the world’s foremost authority on chile peppers. Bosland is a Regents Professor in NMSU’s Plant and Environmental Sciences in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. He leads NMSU’s chile breeding and genetics research program and is the co-founder and director of the Chile Pepper Institute. Bosland has published more than 100 scientific papers dealing with chile genetics, breeding and germplasm evaluation. Bosland has a bachelor’s in genetics and a master’s in vegetable crops from the University of California-Davis. His Ph.D. is in plant breeding and genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been named a Regents Professor, a Fellow of the American Society of Horticultural Science, and one of the 2,000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century. Bosland and his program have been featured in media outlets ranging from National Geographic, the New York Times, New Yorker Magazine, Men’s Health, CBS Sunday Morning, Food Network and Discovery Channel.
