The New Mexico State University rodeo team took home several wins, including men's team and men's all-around, and the men extended their lead in the region after their recent rodeo in Douglas, Ariz.
"The team performed outstanding this weekend, taking home several championships," said Jim Brown, NMSU rodeo coach. "NMSU dominated the tie-down roping and team roping winning top spots throughout. I am very pleased with this year's group; even though we are not as large as usual we are very consistent and talented."
During the weekend, NMSU held top spots in bareback riding, tie-down roping, saddlebroncs, barrel racing and team roping.
The men did well both days in bareback riding; Trenten Montero took home second place overall and Paeden Underwood took home third place over the weekend.
In tie-down the men held top spots overall. Cody Mirabal took home first place and Ben South placed third. Mirabal also won men's all-around during the rodeo.
The men also did well in team roping, Victor Ugalde, from NMSU, and Morgan McVay, from Mesalands College, took home first place overall; Mirabel and Reno Eddy took home second place overall.
Other wins for the men include Justin Harrell, who placed first overall in saddlebroncs, and Tyke Kipp, who took fourth overall in steer wrestling.
The women also did well over the weekend and held top spots in barrel racing. Meghan Johnson placed first and second over the weekend, and took home first overall. Nalynn Cline took home third on the first day. Nicole Sweazea, from NMSU, and Kaleigh Hertz, from Central Arizona College, placed third overall in team roping.
The next competition for the NMSU rodeo teams will be Oct. 11-12 in Tucumcari, N.M.
