The scent of roasting green chile will be on the air this weekend in Deming during the annual Luna County 4-H Chile Roast Fundraiser, held in conjunction with the Deming Great American Duck Race.
"We usually roast between four and six tons of donated green chile," said Luna County Extension Agent Jack Blandford. "We want to thank Don Hartman Farms for its continued support of Luna County 4-H."
The six Luna County 4-H clubs will assist Blandford and other volunteers with the roast between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, and Sunday, Aug. 25. The fundraiser will be held at the Luna County office, located at 210 B Poplar, in Deming.
Cost is $20 for 35 pounds of roasted chile, or $30 for 35 pounds of freezer-ready chile. Chiles are put in quart-size bags, averaging 6-9 chiles per bag.
Funds raised from the event will support scholarships, state and national 4-H trips and Luna County 4-H programs.
