NMSU allocates $1.6 million to improve faculty salaries

In an effort to help faculty members' salaries move closer to their peers at other universities, New Mexico State University is implementing a round of increases for the Las Cruces campus faculty.


The NMSU Board of Regents recently approved the funding for the first phase of the multi-year plan to bring faculty salaries to a market-competitive level.

"The Board of Regents is committed to ensuring that New Mexico State University continues to keep and recruit the best faculty in support of our outstanding students and world-class research," said Regents Chair Mike Cheney. "It is a key priority for the board to stand behind the president as he works toward improving the salaries of all faculty and staff. This is a great first step."

The university has allocated $1.6 million to the colleges to move 122 non-tenure track regular faculty and 256 tenure-track and tenured regular faculty closer to market salaries.

"I want to thank the NMSU Board of Regents for their support of our faculty," said NMSU President Garrey Carruthers. "Our Regents have committed to moving faculty salaries to market levels, hence the administration has developed a multi-year plan to accomplish that goal."

"We have a wonderful group of faculty who bring dynamic, cutting-edge teaching and research to our university. We need to do everything we can to retain and recruit the best faculty for our students, and this support from the Regents will help us achieve that goal."

The 378 faculty members who will be assisted by these funds represent about half of the Las Cruces faculty. This group of faculty includes those who are at less than 90 percent of their peers at other universities.

"This is an important opportunity to invest in our greatest resource - our people," said interim Executive Vice President and Provost Greg Fant.

Faculty salaries will be effective with the new contract period (July 1 for 12-month faculty and Aug. 19 for nine-month faculty).

The market comparison for instructional faculty on the Las Cruces campus was developed from two sources. The primary source is the Oklahoma State University (OSU) salary survey. This survey was used unless the comparison group was too small, in which case the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) salary survey was used. These surveys define disciplines based on the "Classification of Instructional Programs: 2000 Edition" (CIP), published by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Within guidelines issued by the Provost's Office, NMSU deans were responsible for determining allocation methodologies within their colleges and for submitting final recommendations. These methodologies have been approved for the coming fiscal year (FY14).
