SANTA FE, N.M. - Spring is in full swing and it's time to get back into the gardens.
ta Fe Master Gardener Association is hosting its ninth annual Spring Garden Fair and Plant Sale, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Santa Fe Fairgrounds, 3229 Rodeo Road, Santa Fe.
"This year's theme is 'Food for Thought,' with speakers, clinics and demonstrations all tied to the idea of nourishing ourselves, our land and the creatures that share the land with us," said Bob Zimmerman, president of the association. "This is a very popular event for our community with a larger turnout each year."
The garden fair, a free event open to the public, is famous for its popular plant sale, considered by many to be the best in Santa Fe. This year, plants will again be organized by themes to make it easy to select companion plants that work well together and create a perfectly balanced garden.
During the event, speakers will discuss such topics as how to build a compost tea maker, tips for terrific tomatoes, how to build a rain barrel, how to attract birds and pollinators to your backyard year-round, and bee-friendly gardening practices.
Master Gardener volunteers will provide demonstrations on cactus gardens, creating floral designs using xeriscape and native garden flowers, creating a wildflower meadow, herb gardens, worm composting and xeric gardens, as well as hosting a junior gardener corner.
Vendors and exhibitors will provide a wide variety of information about gardening and available products.
Another popular part of the fair is the Ask A Master Gardener, where volunteers answer questions regarding individuals' gardening issues.
The Santa Fe Master Gardener Association is an educational organization in which volunteers are trained by New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service horticultural specialists. The volunteers then assist the county Extension agent in providing the general public reliable, current, research-based gardening information.
