NMSU faculty and students to offer summer musical theater workshop

Three New Mexico State University theater veterans will host a musical theater workshop for high school and college students and adults from 1-5 p.m. June 4-8 and June 11-15 at Holy Cross Retreat, 1327 N. Miranda.

The workshop will consist of two sessions. In Session I, "Broadway Favorites," students will learn about proper musical theater acting and singing styles, audition techniques, and script and song analysis. The session will conclude with a showcase on Friday, June 8, at 6 p.m. for an invited audience.

In Session II, "Contemporary Broadway," students will learn about incorporating pop style in their singing, as well as sources to find appropriate audition material. This session also will feature intensive character work and will conclude with a showcase on Friday, June 15, at 6 p.m.

Both sessions will prepare participants for local and national musical theater auditions by offering insights into industry standards for song selection and audition materials. The workshop also will provide one-on-one time to analyze each participant's strengths and areas for growth.

Leaders of the workshop include Robby Randall, Carrie Oliver and Tom Smith. Randall is an accompanist and vocal coach. He is currently completing a master's in music education and has been involved in numerous theater productions both on stage and as a piano accompanist.

Oliver is a voice teacher and performer. She has been seen onstage with the Dona Ana Lyric Opera, American Southwest Theatre Company, and No Strings Theatre Company in addition to productions in Arizona and Texas.

Smith is an NMSU associate professor of theater and serves as the artistic director for the American Southwest Theatre Company. He has directed productions throughout the country, including Off-Off-Broadway plays, and locally, including "Seussical," "Into the Woods" and "Fiddler on the Roof."

To allow each participant maximum attention, class size is limited. Reserve a spot for either or both sessions by contacting Oliver at (505) 312-5774. Cost is $100 per session, or $175 for both.
