New Mexico State University will become the first and only university in the nation to offer housing specifically designated for student veterans and their families transitioning out of the military and into student life. The first groups are expected to move in at the beginning of February.
The Student Veterans' Association of NMSU, a student organization that helps veterans transition to university life, has worked in conjunction with NMSU's Department of Housing and Residential Life to offer affordable housing on campus to student veterans attending the university full time. This move will create a community of student veterans within the family housing area on the NMSU campus.
"As a student veteran alum of New Mexico State University, it is with a great deal of pride to see SVA of NMSU and Housing and Residential Life taking great strides to make the college experience for student veterans an enjoyable one," said Michael Ruybal, director of veterans services at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and a 2008 NMSU graduate. "The partnership that the leadership of the SVA of NMSU and Julie Weber are establishing takes a giant step forward to solidifying the commitment that New Mexico State University is willing to make for our veterans, military personnel and families.
"The Student Veterans' Association of New Mexico State University is a strong student advocate for commitment and dedication to our student veterans and families as they continue to make the transition from active duty to veteran - a transition which is not an easy one, to say the least. However, this partnership puts the university's best foot forward to help in that process."
The SVA of NMSU saw a need to provide affordable housing for student veterans, which will allow them to thrive academically in a university setting and with a sense of belonging within the community. The houses are located on the NMSU campus, just a few minutes' walk from classrooms.
"The Department of Housing and Residential Life is very happy to provide a needed service to our student-veterans as they transition out of active duty," said Julie Weber, the director of NMSU's Housing and Residential Life. "It is our hope that a veterans-dedicated area of our Student Family Housing community will offer some of the support they need in order to be successful at NMSU."
The SVA of NMSU has focused on bringing awareness to the NMSU campus about the needs of veterans who choose to go to school, and how to better assist them in transitioning into academic life. Traditionally, there have been difficulties for veterans who choose to go to school, but the SVA of NMSU is confident that providing housing in a community of fellow veterans will remind them that they are never alone.
