NMSU's Luna County Extension Service offers pesticide applicator workshop

New Mexico State University's Luna County Cooperative Extension office will offer a pesticide applicator workshop at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at La Fonda Restaurant in Deming.


Registration is $20 and includes lunch. RSVP with reservation fee is due Monday, Dec. 17, either by mail or in person to the Luna County Extension Office, 210 B Poplar, in Deming.

Five presentations are scheduled:

Stephanie Walker, Extension vegetable specialist, will present "Diseases in vegetables in N.M. - Causes and Control;" Richard Heerema, Extension pecan specialist, will discuss "Pecan pests, diseases and disorders;" Carol Sutherland, New Mexico Department of Agriculture entomologist presents "What's Up Doc?," discussing insect issues seen in her lab this year, with a focus on southwest New Mexico issues; Jamshid Ashigh, Extension weed specialist, will present "Managing for Herbicide Failure;" Ryan Hiles, New Mexico Department of Agriculture Pesticide Management Bureau, will discuss updates in soil fumigation recordkeeping requirements and Bryan McCleery, Amvac Chemical Corporation, will give a course update on K-Pam usage with vegetables.

Five continuing education units will be awarded to attendees.

At 3 p.m., following the workshops, Hiles will administer the private pesticide applicators test. There is an additional $15 fee for the test; checks should be made out to NMDA.
