NMSU Extension to participate in 5-State Beef Conference

Cattle producers in the five-state region will have an opportunity to learn the latest trends on managing cattle at the third annual 5-State Beef Conference.

New Mexico State University is joining land-grant universities in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado in providing the programs that will be offered Tuesday, Aug. 30 in Boise City, Okla.; Wednesday, Aug. 31, in Wiley, Colo.; and Thursday, Sept. 1, in Canadian, Texas. Registration begins at 2:30 p.m. with programs from 3 to 7 p.m. each day.

"This is a unique educational conference because Extension and university beef specialists from the five universities take the program to the producers," said Manny Encinias, NMSU Extension beef specialist who is presenting at the programs. "Instead of each state holding its own conference, the idea is to put together a group of speakers, and hold three meetings in the region at locations that are centrally located to the producers."

Encinias' presentation will be on managing cattle fertility and productivity. Other presentation topics will be:

"Structure of the Beef Industry with High Grain Prices," presented by Derrell Peel of Oklahoma State University

"Genomics for Commercial Cattlemen," presented by Bob Weaber of Kansas State University

"Integrated Fly Control for Cow/Cattle Operators," presented by Justin Talley of Oklahoma State University

"Managing During Drought," presented by Chris Richards of Oklahoma State University (Boise City), John Wagner of Colorado State University (Wiley) and Ted McCollum of Texas AgriLife Extension (Canadian)

Locations of the events are: Cimarron County Fair Building, 1300 N. Cimarron St., Boise City, Okla.; Wiley Community Center, 203 Pheasant Run, Wiley, Colo.; and Hemphill County Exhibition Center, 10,865 Exhibition Center Rd., Canadian, Texas.

Pre-registration fee is $35 per individual or $50 per couple. Register online at http://aces.nmsu.edu/fivestatesbeef, or contact Oklahoma State University's Animal Science Extension at 405-744-6060. Registration after Aug. 21 or at the door will be $50 for individuals and $65 for couples.
