A wildlife quiz bowl team from New Mexico State University buzzed in with enough correct answers for a second-place finish at the Western Regional Student Conclave in Arcata, Calif.
"The students really pulled together," said Gary Roemer, who advised the team with colleague Martha Desmond. "This is was something they did on their own."
Team members answered questions and identified wildlife slides, specimens and taped bird songs during the competition at Humboldt State University last month. The University of Idaho captured first place.
NMSU team members are Morgan Vance of La Mesa, Robin Boyle of Backstone, Mass., Jessica Griffin of Las Cruces, Jesse Berryhill of Espaņola, Zachary Schwenke of Albuquerque and Jedediah Murphy of Las Cruces.
NMSU will host the regional conclave next year. The host team is not allowed to compete, Roemer said.
