LAS CRUCES–Two New Mexico FFA officers met with President George W. Bush and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns during the FFA State Presidents' Conference in Washington, D.C.
Caleb Dodd of Melrose, state FFA president, and Russell Walter of Animas, state secretary, attended the weeklong event as New Mexico's two representatives.
The officers spent 40 minutes with President Bush at the White House on July 27. They also visited the Department of Agriculture where they spoke with Johanns, a former FFA member, and other USDA officials.
The conference included tours of historical landmarks and daily leadership seminars.
Dodd and Walter attended the event for training on how to direct state activities, said Les Purcella, state FFA supervisor.
New Mexico's 4,000 FFA members participate in community service projects, competitions and leadership events that prepare them for more than 300 careers related to agriculture.
