ALAMOGORDO - Shannon L. Drake is focusing on diabetes education and money management training as Otero County's new home economics and 4-H associate with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service.
"My goal is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Otero County," Drake said.
Drake recently attended an in-service training at NMSU that added to the expertise she brings to her position.
The four-day Home Economics/I Can in-service training was conducted for staff members from across the state. NMSU has 37 Extension offices in New Mexico and one in Arizona. Topics ranged from diabetic education and stress management to financial planning and anger management.
Drake joined the Otero County Extension office in January. She earned a bachelor's degree in family and consumer science from NMSU in 2000. She plans to pursue a master's degree starting in the fall.
Drake has lived in Alamogordo for about four years. She was born at Holloman Air Force Base and divided her time as a child between Alamogordo and Las Cruces.
Drake and her husband, Scott, have two children, Sage, 3, and Sheyenne, 2.
She enjoys sewing, crafts, skiing and spending time with her family.
