The Artesia chapter, coached by Monte Avery and Justin Lamb, won the sweepstakes award in production agriculture for team members' performance in related contests. The Dexter chapter, coached by Glen Trammell, won the horticultural sweepstakes.

The agricultural mechanics sweepstakes, based on competition at the New Mexico State Fair in September, was presented to the Clovis chapter, coached by Wayne Chambers, Edwin Ford and Jan Klinger.

Members of 456 teams tested their knowledge and skills in the three-day competition. They created dish gardens, graded livestock, classified soil samples, sampled dairy products and gave reasons to defend their placings in judging contests. The 1,460 students represented 61 chapters statewide.

New Mexico has 6,000 agricultural education students, more than 4,000 of whom belong to FFA. FFA members participate in community service projects, competitions and leadership events that prepare them for more than 300 careers related to agriculture.
