More than 850 members and guests participated in state convention activities, including elections and a career fair. About 4,000 of New Mexico's 6,000 agricultural education students participate in FFA, which prepares members for more than 300 careers related to agriculture.

"Convention is the highlight of any FFA member's year," said Mark Runyan, assistant state supervisor of agricultural education. "All participants might not win an award but, they can pride themselves on the fact that they tried."

The leadership sweepstakes award was presented to the Artesia chapter, which earned the most points in 10 career development events during the week. Chapter advisers are Monte Avery and Justin Lamb.

Seven chapters earned superior awards for participating in 15 required committee areas, which range from chapter projects to community service. The winning high schools are Animas, Artesia, Clovis, Gadsden (Anthony, N.M.), Hagerman, Harding County, House, Las Cruces, Las Vegas, Los Lunas, Mesa Vista (El Rito, N.M.) and Moriarty.

The state's top five chapters-Artesia, Clovis, Hagerman, Las Cruces and Mesa Vista-will compete for national awards based on records and photos of their activities.

A total of 141 members earned state FFA degrees by completing two years of agricultural education classes and earning or investing at least $1,000 in an agribusiness enterprise.

Twelve members earned American FFA degrees, the organization's top honor. Requirements include four years of agricultural education classes. Recipients must be high school graduates who have earned or invested $7,500 in a supervised agricultural experience program.
