NMSU To Host State 4-H Conference July 9-12

LAS CRUCES - With a mission to learn, compete and have fun, close to 600 4-H members throughout New Mexico will attend State 4-H Conference July 9-12 at New Mexico State University.

With an "Operation: 4-H" theme, this year's event will feature spy and detective games and activities for senior 4-H members ages 14 to19.

Members can compete in contest ranging from archery, livestock judging and shooting sports to public speaking and a fashion revue. They can also take part in more than a dozen educational and recreational workshops including a war-mission scavenger hunt and a dance workshop.

"State 4-H Conference is an opportunity for 4-H members to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have gained during the year by competing in life skill contests with other 4-H members," said Danette McGuire, 4-H youth activities specialist.

Two new workshops have been added to the schedule. "Not Just Books: The Other Part of College Life" will show 4-H members how to make the most of college. The other new workshop, "The Truth Is Out There: 4-H Cyber Espionage Team," will highlight new multimedia technology, including web page design.

The conference will also feature guest speaker Milton Creagh, a motivational speaker who works with at-risk youth.

On July 11, 4-H members will elect seven state officers. Officers, along with ambassadors and diplomats selected in January, serve as the state 4-H leadership team and help run statewide activities.

"4-H activities provide members the chance to gain important skills in areas such as leadership, citizenship, decision making, goal setting and self-esteem," McGuire said.
