LAS CRUCES - New Mexico State University's Equestrian Team will host some of the best intercollegiate horse show teams March 11 during a national Western invitational.
NMSU is leading the region in stock seat equitation," said Debbie Jones, NMSU's Equestrian Team coach. "We have the invitational here this Saturday and then we travel to Cheyenne for two more stock seat shows."
The team only has three more competitions, including Saturday's event, before they travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for regional competition.
From regionals, riders who place first, second, or third advance to zone competition, where they must place first or second to earn a spot at nationals. This year's zone competition will be held in Canyon, Texas.
Riders qualify for nationals by either being a part of the team with the most points in its region by the end of the season or by earning enough individual points to qualify for regionals.
Eleven NMSU riders will participate in Saturday's event. Jessica Ackerman, Melanie Curry, Camile Effer, Sam Marusich and Jeb Stuart will make up the first team. Shaundra Gardner, Kristi Gottsponer, Maureen McCamley, Jean Murray and Jody Savoie will ride on NMSU's second team.
Saturday's invitational will start at 10 a.m. at NMSU's equestrian center (corner of Union Street and Stewart Street).
Admission is free and the public is welcome.
