LAS CRUCES -- Finding out more about 4-H, the nation's largest youth organization, is now as easy as making a toll-free call in New Mexico.
The state 4-H office in Las Cruces will field questions from interested parents and young people, said Cheryl Butterfield, state 4-H youth activities specialist with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service.
"When the phone's answered at the state office, we'll give the caller information on the 4-H program statewide," Butterfield said. "Once we find out more about them and where they're from, we'll put them in touch with their county 4-H program, which is designed to fit local needs."
More than 30,000 youth belong to 4-H in New Mexico. Programs for ages 5 to 19 include everything from raising rabbits to building model rockets.
The 4-H toll-free number is 888-646-5204. "As of March, they ran out of 800 numbers and started the 888 prefix, which works the same way," Butterfield explained.
