"Stand for Children" Events Planned June 1 in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES -- Las Cruces will hold a walk and rally June 1 to coincide with "Stand for Children Day" events at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

"'Stand for Children' is a national day of commitment to children," said Pamela Henry-Pollat, home economist with New Mexico State University's Dona Ana County Extension office. The event has been endorsed by the National 4-H Council and Dona Ana Maternal-Child Health Council, she added.

In Las Cruces, "Stand for Children" supporters will assemble at Apodaca Park from 7:30 to 8 a.m. June 1 and walk to the Downtown Mall for a rally from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

"We're planning lots of activities for children at the mall," Henry-Pollat said.

Stand for Children will be a nonpartisan event and no politicians will be invited to speak, organizers said.

"It's a day for us to commit ourselves as a community and as a nation to improving the quality of children's lives, as well as their health and safety," said Tami Wray, a volunteer with the Maternal-Child Health Council.
