LAS CRUCES - Esteban Herrera, a horticulturist with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service, received the 2000 Outstanding Extension Educator award from the American Society for Horticultural Science.
Herrera assists commercial growers of pecans, grapes, apples and pistachios. He serves on the boards of directors for the pecan, apple and grape growers' associations and coordinates annual conferences and conference proceedings for those groups.
He received his award during ceremonies July 23 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Herrera came to NMSU in 1978 after serving as an entomologist, agricultural loan officer and graduate program coordinator in Mexico.
Pecans have been a main focus of Herrera's work. He published a pecan orchard management handbook and conducts an orchard management shortcourse every two years.
Herrera has taken an active role in promoting New Mexico's wine industry, initiating a New Mexico wine festival during his two terms as president of the Vine and Wine Society.
He served as editor of the New Mexico Academy of Sciences from 1984 to 1999, producing an annual one-theme journal.
