February Workshop to Help Ranchers Improve Efficiency

LAS CRUCES -- Cattle producers will meet at the Tucumcari Convention Center Feb.15-16 for a training session on analyzing their herds' performance.

The workshop will cover the use of the Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) system, developed by the National Cattlemen's Association, its members and university Extension specialists.

SPA is a software program that measures such factors as reproduction, production, grazing, marketing, financial and economic performance. The program then compares an individual ranch's figures with those of other cow-calf enterprises.

"This will be an intensive workshop designed for the cattle producer who has a genuine interest in being able to analyze his operation's financial and production status," said Ron Parker, workshop organizer and Extension animal resources department head at New Mexico State University.

The SPA system is intended to be used as an annual tool by the cow-calf producer, Parker said. "SPA tells you how well you did compared to last year and compared to others during the same year." Those attending will have to do their homework before coming to the workshop, he said. Registered participants must fill out a series of forms about their operations in order to enjoy the full benefit of the workshop and take home detailed analyses.

"The SPA program also produces information that can be used for tax purposes, as well as for preparing lender-requested information," Parker said. "And, the confidentiality of producer data used in this workshop will be maintained."

The workshop is jointly sponsored by NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service and the Texas Agricultural Extension Service.

Registration costs $150 per ranch and includes software and educational materials. Registration will be limited to 20 ranches on a first-come basis. To register, call Ron Parker in Las Cruces at (505) 646-1709, or contact your county Extension office.

If you are an individual with a disability who is in need of an auxiliary aid or service to participate in this meeting, please call Parker by Jan. 15, 1996.
