LAS CRUCES--Christmas on the Pecos in Carlsbad, a boat tour of holiday lights, will continue through New Year's Eve.
Carlsbad residents set up holiday light displays in their backyards along about 3 miles of the river. "It's one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen," said Mike Cook, coordinator of New Mexico State University's Rural Economic Development Through Tourism (REDTT) project. "The residents go all-out with an amazing array of lights."
This event has been recognized as one of the country's top 100 tours by the National Bus Association. Visitors ride pontoon boats along the decorated river route. The boats are piloted by members of the Carlsbad Navy. "It takes a lot of effort from a lot of people to put this show on," said Cook. "It's a great event for the entire family."
Cook said anyone wishing to take the tour should make reservations ahead of time because space is limited. Call 505-628-0952 for tickets.
