Discussion on Valencia Multipurpose Facility Planned

LAS CRUCES--In an effort to improve recreational opportunities in Valencia County, proponents of a new multipurpose facility will hold a planning meeting Feb. 16 in Los Lunas.

"This will be our second meeting and we hope to gauge the support of the community," said Frank Holguin, Valencia County program coordinator with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service. "There is a real need for this type of facility, and Valencia County's central location makes it ideal."

The idea for a new recreational facility stemmed from overcrowding at the county's fairgrounds during 4-H activities. "There aren't enough pens to accommodate all the animals at one time," Holguin said. "We've had to expand our fair from one weekend to two weekends, and we send each group of animals home after they are judged."

Valencia County has limited facilities for rodeos, horse shows and recreational and sporting events, Holguin said. "A centrally located coliseum also could host statewide events."

Ideas for fecility components could include a covered arena, soccer and baseball fields, an outdoor park area, BMX bicycle course, skate park, auditorium, cafeteria, swimming pool and concert seating.

NMSU's Extension Service is helping the group with the planning process. "We're extending an open invitation to individuals, businesses and elected officials who want to help our community develop this project," Holguin said. The meeting will be held Feb. 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Los Lunas fire station, 465 Main Street.
