LAS CRUCES--New Mexico State University's Equestrian Team placed second at a national invitational tournament held on the NMSU campus March 13. The contest was won by The Ohio State University.
A total of 22 teams from across the country, including three from NMSU, competed in reining and three levels of Western equitation.
"This was a great opportunity to see who the team will meet at nationals,"said Debbie Jones, team coach. "We are very fortunate to be able to have this show in Las Cruces."
Riders on NMSU's reserve champion team were Amy Berger, Shaundra Gardner, Kristy Gottsponer, Miguel Maes and Megan Rossiter.
NMSU riders also received several individual awards. Gottsponer was the intermediate Western horsemanship champion. Rossiter was second in open horsemanship. Miguel Maes placed first in his reining class and was named reserve champion overall. Camille Effler placed second in beginning Western horsemanship, and Jeb Stuart placed second in reining.
Others riding for NMSU last weekend were Amy Allen, Kari Dickerson, Stephanie Hefley, Wendy Keiss, Jennifer Lowder, Erica Lucero, Jennifer Risley and Shannon Salazar.
