Block Party in Sunland Park Set for Saturday

LAS CRUCES -- A block party Saturday in Sunland Park will offer fun, free food and family activities sponsored by a number of community organizations. Activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of Sunland Park City Hall, 3800 McNutt Road, include dunking booths, basketball tosses and free hot dogs and soft drinks.

"This is a fair for the community that should be a lot of fun for kids and their families," said organizer Silvia Jimenez, community development coordinator with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service. "Many organizations from throughout Doņa Ana County have volunteered to come, and we're enthusiastic about the activities."

Jimenez said the event is designed for a tri-state audience in southern New Mexico, West Texas and northern Chihuahua, Mexico.

"We want to make people from the border community aware of services that are available," she said. "We also want to pool our efforts in the three states to develop programs for communities like Sunland Park."

Donors for the event include Extension, Doņa Ana County South-Central New Mexico Community Prevention Coalition, Pepsi Cola of Las Cruces and Sunland Park Racetrack.

Sponsoring organizations include NMSU's Extension 4-H and nutrition education programs, the Sunland Park Police and Fire departments, Las Cruces Police Department, Adolescent Family Life program, La Casa Domestic Violence Program, Home Education Livelihood Program, Housing Authority, Community Action Agency, New Mexico Department of Labor, Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Club de la Amistad, Mujeres Unidas Contra Sidas, and Women, Infants and Children program.

The block party is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jimenez at (505) 525-6649.
