LAS CRUCES Ð The first-ever Arts in the Orchard festival will offer locally grown apples, cherries and other fruits for the picking Sept. 13 at La Finca meadow near San Patricio.
"Visitors are encouraged to bring bags for their fruit and blankets or chairs to sit on and enjoy some music," said Mike Cook, technical writer with New Mexico State University's Rural Economic Development Through Tourism (REDTT) project. "Orchard maps will be available to help people locate their favorite fruit trees, such as peaches, plums and apricots."
REDTT, which is part of NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service, helped Lincoln County obtain a grant to sponsor the event.
The festival will be held from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. Activities will include fruit judging, art demonstrations, and face-painting for kids.
"There'll also be an apple pie contest and awards for other apple dishes," Cook said.
Admission to the event is $2 for adults and kids 16 and older.
La Finca meadow is located at mile marker 281.6 on the south side of U.S. Highway 70, east of the San Patricio exit and 22 miles east of Ruidoso.
