LAS CRUCES - Holm Bursum III of Socorro was recently named the 1998 Distinguished Alumnus for New Mexico State University's College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences .
The award was presented during the ground-breaking ceremony for the Center for Sustainable Development of Arid Lands on the NMSU campus. The presentation was made by Jerry Schickedanz, interim dean and chief executive officer of the college.
"His letterhead describes his position at the First State Bank of Socorro as president, CEO and cashier. I guess that is Holm Bursum's way of saying you are not a number at his bank," Schickedanz said. "He also is chairman of the board."
Bursum was raised on the Bursum ranch near Socorro. He received his bachelor's degree in agriculture from NMSU in 1956. Following his ROTC training, he became an Air Force officer after graduation. He then became an assistant at Albuquerque National Bank. Bursum returned home to become executive vice president of the First State Bank of Socorro, becoming president in 1987.
Bursum has been involved in many organizations, including the Socorro City Council. He is a past chairman of the Socorro County Board of Commissioners. He serves as chair of the New Mexico Highway Commission and is a member of the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce and the New Mexico Tech Foundation's Board of Directors.
Bursum also has served as advisor to the Federal Reserve Bank's Council of Financial Institutions, the U.S. Small Business Administration's National Advisory Committee and the National Transportation's Advisory Board.
