NMSU's Extension Service helps Las Cruces students learn about Kids & Kows & More

It's not every day that fourth-graders get to see where milk comes from or how chile is produced, which is exactly why New Mexico State University's Dona Ana County Extension Office is helping organize Kids & Kows & More from 9 a.m.-noon March 31 and April 1 at the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces.

Kids & Kows & More is an annual two-day event designed to show nearly 1,000 students from around Las Cruces the value of agriculture. This year's program will focus on some of Southern New Mexico's largest industries, including pecans, chile, cotton, beef, dairy and cheese. A special lesson on food safety will also be taught.

"It's really neat to see the look on kids' faces when they realize where all this stuff comes from. We feel it's important to focus on agricultural awareness, especially with how big it is in our community," said Rafael Realivasquez, NMSU's Extension agriculture agent for Dona Ana County. He said many students never have a chance to see crops and farm animals in person.
