New Mexico State University's Southern Area Health Education Center and School of Nursing are sponsoring a Diabetes Wellness Day so those affected by diabetes can learn more about diabetes resources from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Dona Ana County Offices, 845 Motel Blvd.
Sponsored by a number of local health care providers, the event will include not only presentations from health care professionals, but chances for attendees to meet representatives of local agencies that provide diabetes services, sample products available to help manage diabetes and learn about new treatments and ideas in diabetes management.
Amy Trujillo, the program coordinator of SoAHEC's Diabetes Prevention Initiative, said it will be a "great one-day event for anyone seeking more information on diabetes. They'll be able to learn more, ask questions and get involved."
Wanda Borges, an assistant professor in NMSU's School of Nursing and president of the board of Southern New Mexico Diabetes Outreach, is an active member of the Diabetes Wellness Day Committee and has helped to organize the event. Trujillo said Borges is a leader in the field of diabetes care and outreach.
Joseph Berning, an assistant professor in NMSU's physical education recreation and dance department, will give a presentation during the event discussing exercise and its effects on diabetes called "Physical Activities and Diabetes: A Guide to Better Understanding and Practical Intervention."
Trujillo said the keynote speaker will be Trisha Poretti, a diabetes educator from Florida, who will give a presentation called "Putting Diabetes into Perspective, Lowering your Blood Sugar Level with Laughter." Poretti has had diabetes for many years and understands both the importance of taking care of diabetes as well as the frustration of dealing with it on a daily basis.
Trujillo said this is the second time the Diabetes Wellness Day has been held. Last year's event had a large attendance and so this year it has been moved to a larger venue.
Sponsors for the event include Ben Archer Health Clinics, City of Las Cruces Senior Services, Dona Ana County Health and Human Services, La Clinica De Familia, MountainView Regional Medical Center, New Mexico Department of Health, NMSU Cooperative Extension Service, NMSU School of Nursing, NMSU SoAHEC, Southern New Mexico Diabetes Outreach and VFW Post 10124.
Participants need to register in order to attend the event. Registration is $5 and scholarships are available. For more information or to register, call the MountainView Regional Medical Center Diabetes Department at (505) 556-6895.
