NMSU alumni recognized for distinguished careers, service

Through a rigorous nomination and selection process, the New Mexico State University Alumni Association has selected the recipients for the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Awards and the James F. Cole Memorial Award for Service.



The NMSU Alumni Association will recognize seven outstanding alumni, one from each of the six academic colleges, as well as the recipient of the James F. Cole Memorial Award for Service at Homecoming in October.

For the past 60 years, the NMSU Alumni Association has presented accomplished alumni with these prestigious awards, selecting honorees based on personal accomplishment, professional achievement and charitable service. The James F. Cole Memorial Award for Service, specifically, is presented to NMSU alumni who have demonstrated outstanding university involvement and civic, humanitarian and professional service.

The 2018 Distinguished Alumni are:

• Rebeccah L. Brown, MD, ’86, College of Arts and Sciences
• Tara Jaramillo, ’93 ’95, College of Education
• Dion Messer, ’84, College of Engineering
• Rance C. Miles, ’80, College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences
• Eric S. Powell, ’80, College of Business
• Tommy Sheppard, ’91, College of Health and Social Services

The 2018 James F. Cole Memorial Award for Service recipient is Patty Lopez, Ph.D., a three-time graduate – ’80, ’82 and ’89 – of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The awards will be presented during Homecoming 2018 festivities at a dinner on Friday, Oct. 5. Recipients will also be recognized throughout the weekend at public events.
