NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu appointed Melendrez to the position Aug. 7, replacing Jim Peach, NMSU economics professor emeritus who retired in June.

Under NCAA rules, each member university must have a faculty athletics representative to provide oversight of the academic integrity of athletics programs and serve as an advocate for the well-being of student-athletes, among other responsibilities.

“The opportunity to serve as the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative was exciting to me because I believe a successful athletics department has the potential to have a significant positive impact on the university,” Melendrez said. “Having served in a variety of roles related to athletics including chair of the Faculty Athletics Council, I believe that I can contribute positively to the success of the athletic department and student-athletes.”

The duties of the position also include reporting to NMSU President John Floros in an advisory capacity on matters related to athletics, Melendrez said, and maintaining a working relationship with NMSU Athletics Director Mario Moccia to develop a sound understanding of athletics programs.

Peach, a longtime professor in the College of Business, had served as NMSU’s faculty athletics representative since 2014 until he retired in June.
