NMSU Foundation reports second record-breaking year in fundraising

For the second year in a row, the New Mexico State University Foundation set a new fundraising record in university history, benefitting students, outreach and life-changing research across the NMSU system.

With the help of generous donors, through gifts large and small, Aggie supporters raised more than $22.4 million between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018. It’s $1.4 million more than last year’s fundraising efforts.

“The generosity that we, at the NMSU Foundation, see on a daily basis is a great illustration of the pride our alumni, friends, business partners and community leaders feel about NMSU and its students,” said NMSU Foundation President Andrea Tawney. “We always say that every gift makes a difference, and as you can see, whether it was $25 or $250,000, these contributions added up to total that will touch thousands of students’ lives in the years to come.”

The NMSU system serves a diverse population, including students from rural New Mexico and our community, first-generation students, veterans and more. Tawney says this makes scholarships critical in NMSU’s efforts to recruit and retain ambitious and talented students from any income background.

“Many of our students see college as a way to change their lives and the lives of their families. To them, NMSU means far more than earning a degree or learning a trade – it’s a way to a better life,” she said. “Without incredible investments in scholarships from our donors, hundreds of our students would never finish this dream at our NMSU campuses or even find it possible to start it.”

That is the focus of NMSU’s largest cash campaign in university history called, “Ignite Aggie Discovery,” which is a year and a half away from its fundraising completion. In just five years since launching the campaign in 2013, the NMSU Foundation has worked with 2,800 donors to raise $99.1 million. With a final goal of $125 million, which includes $50 million specifically for student scholarship endowments, Tawney says the NMSU Foundation is on track to meet the challenge in this aggressive timeline.

NMSU Foundation Board Chair, MaryLou Davis, said the Foundation is fortunate to have a team who shares a belief in this student-centric, empowering mission – consisting of not only professional fundraisers but guided by the leadership of the university, athletic director, coaches, deans, faculty members, community college presidents and staff.

“The Foundation’s tremendous success is possible because of generous donors who have exceeded all expectations, celebrating NMSU in their every action,” Davis said. “Our donors truly want only the best for our students, faculty and NMSU. Through their generosity, they are funding scholarships, professorships and research; building facilities; supporting athletics; and encouraging students to be involved throughout the system by mentoring and helping NMSU attain top-tier status among universities our size. On behalf of the NMSU Foundation Board of Directors, I want to thank each and every one of our donors for providing the quality education, resources and opportunities our Aggie students deserve.”

Tawney added, “We’re proud of our alumni who choose to give back to the place where it all began for them. We’re inspired by friends of NMSU who whole-heartedly believe our students will have a sweeping impact on our state and world. And, we’re honored by our business and foundation partners who see an opportunity to solve real-world issues alongside our faculty and students. Many people play a role in the success of Aggie students, and we’re pleased to see another year where hundreds have stepped up to join us.”
