Giving Tuesday brings the power of collective giving to the NMSU system

Generous donors to the New Mexico State University system have given millions over the past two years to empower students and support cutting-edge programs and outstanding teaching and research during Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving powered by social media and collaboration.

The NMSU system will hold its third-annual Giving Tuesday event on Nov. 28. Last year’s event, part of the giving day held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, brought in more than $2 million in gifts to scholarship funds at all NMSU campuses around the state.

More than 22 new scholarships were established last year, and the initiative drew more than 1,450 donors, including 403 who were making their first-ever gift to the NMSU system.

The entire community is invited to celebrate Giving Tuesday again this year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 28 at NMSU’s Giving Tuesday headquarters in Corbett Center Student Union’s Aggie Lounge on the Las Cruces campus. A special kickoff celebration is planned at 9 a.m. with NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers and other guests, and a closing celebration will start at 5 p.m.

Local radio stations will be broadcasting live with free giveaways, and fun activities and snacks will be available all day. Free parking will be available in designated areas between Corbett Center and Milton Hall.

Online gifts may also be made on Nov. 28 by visiting https://support.nmsu.edu.

This year’s event features select fund-matching opportunities, given by donors to boost some of the scholarships and causes they support. For example, the first $125,000 in gifts made online or in person on Giving Tuesday at the on-campus headquarters will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $2,500 per household. This opportunity is available on a first-come, first-served basis and excludes any contributions toward existing pledges.

In addition, all alumni who make their first-ever charitable contribution to any department, program or scholarship in the NMSU system on Giving Tuesday will be matched dollar-for-dollar by NMSU Chancellor Garrey Carruthers and his wife, Kathy, up to $10,000.

Details about all matching opportunities can be found at https://advancing.nmsu.edu/givingtuesday.

Andrea Tawney, president of the NMSU Foundation, said seeing more and more alumni stay involved with their university and invest in its students is an important part of what Giving Tuesday is all about.

“Scholarships really do empower our students to take charge of their futures,” Tawney said. “Many of our students are also working full-time to make ends meet. You don’t have to give a million dollars to have a huge impact – when we come together on Giving Tuesday, we put our collective giving power to work for students in a truly transformational way.”
