NMSU’s Military and Veterans Appreciation Week begins Nov. 6

Military and Veterans Appreciation Week at New Mexico State University will be held Nov. 6-12. The third annual event highlights and supports NMSU students, faculty and staff who have served or are serving in the armed forces.

“The Military and Veterans Appreciation Week honors our students, staff and faculty who have served and sacrificed to protect our freedoms,” said Hector Sanchez, Military and Veterans Programs director. “The week of events highlights the many ways NMSU is connected to our military service members and veterans, which makes NMSU a stronger institution of higher learning and discovery.”

The week starts with the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, at the Aggie Memorial Tower at the College of Health and Social Services building. Ben Woods will be the featured speaker.

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, the Veterans Day picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Garcia Annex Courtyard. Local veteran service organizations will be available to meet with students, including the Las Cruces Vet Center mobile van and the Employment Readiness Program from White Sands Missile Range.

Student Veterans Organization Day will follow on Wednesday, Nov. 8, with an information table from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Corbett Center’s main entrance.

Thursday, Nov. 9, will be ROTC/National Guard Recruiters Day. Local recruiters will be available from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Games, a climbing wall and information tables will be set up outside Young Hall.

On Friday, Nov. 10, the NMSU faculty and staff military veteran banquet will be held at the NMSU Golf Course Clubhouse. The dinner will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Jack R. Fox, New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services Secretary and Retired New Mexico Army National Guard Brigadier General, will be the featured speaker.

On Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, the Veterans Day Parade will be held at 11 a.m. in downtown Las Cruces. The Student Veterans Organization and Military and Veterans Programs will be a featured float. For more information on the Veterans Day Parade visit http://www.lascrucesvetday.org.

The week concludes with the Armed Forces 5K Run Sunday, Nov. 12, at Aggie Memorial Stadium. The event check-in will start at 7:30 a.m., and the race, which includes an obstacle course, will begin at 8 a.m. The race is open to the public, and the fee is $15 for NMSU students and $20 for non-NMSU students.
