NMSU TRIO Upward Bound program accepting applications

New Mexico State University’s TRIO Upward Bound program is now accepting applications for 23 new participants from Oñate High School, Las Cruces High School and Mayfield High School.

“TRIO Upward Bound is a federally funded program that helps qualified high school students develop the skills and motivation needed to successfully complete high school, and advance to and complete a college education,” said Rosa De La Torre-Burmeister, TRIO Upward Bound program director.

The Upward Bound program includes academic year support as well as a Summer Academy. Participants are offered guidance in educational and career opportunities, as well as exposure to enrichment activities designed to promote leadership, cultural awareness and self-confidence and a taste of college life.

Students who participate in Upward Bound programs are more likely to earn an undergraduate degree than those students from similar backgrounds who did not participate in a federal TRIO program, De La Torre-Burmeister said.

NMSU’s TRIO Upward Bound program is looking for students who want to attend college and earn a bachelor’s degree, are committed to attending all scheduled events, will complete the assigned work, participate in activities and maintain a good attendance record.
