Pontelli was among eight alumni selected to receive the Silver Griffin Award, which recognizes graduates who have at least 10 years of career success in their field and serve as role models for current and future students.

“With so many deserving candidates, I was honored to be among those selected for this award,” said Pontelli. “I am proud of the education I received at Udine which eventually led to my nearly 20-year career serving the students of NMSU.”

Pontelli was named dean of NMSU’s College of Arts and Sciences in May after serving as interim dean in 2016. Pontelli was the head of the Department of Computer Science for five years. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and secured over $14 million in funding for his research.

Pontelli received his degree in information science from the University of Udine in 1991, a master’s degree in computer science jointly between the University of Houston and Udine and a doctorate from NMSU.

“Not everyone has access to a college education, but awards like these demonstrate to current students the value a degree can have as a building block to a successful future,” Pontelli said. “I am grateful to my family and those faculty who supported me when I was a student and I believe the best way to thank them is to pay it forward each and every day here at NMSU.”
