NMSU public health students promote Exercise is Medicine on Campus campaign

Walking is a simple form of exercise, and public health sciences undergraduate students at New Mexico State University are encouraging the campus to get moving through Exercise is Medicine on Campus, a national initiative.

To celebrate Exercise is Medicine on Campus, the students will host the Presidentís Walk at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, with President Garrey Carruthers leading a walk from Hadley Hall to Corbett Center Student Union.

ďWe may be able to change the national trends toward physical inactivity by simply starting on campus with this initiative. It is designed to engage students, faculty and staff in ways to improve their health and wellness through physical activity,Ē said Cindy Kratzke, public health sciences associate professor.

NMSU is the first university in the state this year to receive national recognition for participation in the national campus initiative promoting a healthier campus, Kratzke said. Exercise is Medicine on Campus brings collaborative relationships between the departments of Kinesiology and Public Health Sciences along with the Student Health Center and campus Health & Wellness.

Before the Presidentís Walk, Carruthers will sign a proclamation declaring October as Exercise is Medicine on Campus month. A student-led information table with physical and informational activities for students, faculty and staff to learn more will be available at Corbett Center.
