“Our primary goal is to increase engagement with employees to make them part of the dialog about where the university is going and inform administration about what employees think about proposals and plans related to university matters,” said Adam Cavotta, senior university training specialist and Employee Council chair-elect. “We want to see a campus community that is open, inclusive and caring, and the employees are the people who can and do make that happen. We want employees to feel empowered and know that their voices have been heard.”

For the sixth year, Employee Council is sponsoring a free picnic lunch for all faculty and staff members. The annual Employee Appreciation Picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the Horseshoe on the NMSU campus.

“The employee picnic is a time to relax, eat and enjoy the company of the many coworkers across campus who you might not see on a regular basis,” he said. “In good times and bad, it’s good to come together to share news, catch up with all the changes happening throughout campus, and in most cases, discover that we all have shared experiences that make us who we are as an organization. It’s a time to remember that we are all in this together.”

Employee Council usually hosts one meeting a month, which are open to all employees. The next meeting will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in Milton Hall Room 85. For employees who cannot attend the meetings, a live webcast also is available.

Employee Council consists of 23 voting members, and its executive committee meets regularly with the president. Employee Council members participate in more than 18 standing committees focused on the administration of university policies, initiatives and incentives.

On Monday, Employee Council hosted an open forum on the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Previously, open forum topics have included athletics, benefits, university budget, the staffing study, transforming NMSU and legislative priorities.

“As Employee Council, we are active in engaging all employees and bringing employees together with administration to get the facts, ask questions and provide feedback,” Cavotta said. “No other entity on campus is so uniquely positioned to bring everyone together like that.

“As Employee Council, we have a seat at the Board of Regents meetings and provide reports to the board, we are on the routing queue for new administrative policies, and we serve on dozens of committees spanning many aspects of NMSU operations,” Cavotta said. “We are engaged in many aspects of what happens at NMSU, but we need to hear more from employees. We want to see more employees attend our meetings, open forums, and we want more employees to reach out to us at empcouncil@nmsu.edu to let us know about their concerns and ideas.”
