NMSU to host first Discover Sustainability Symposium

Water, soil, Mother Earth and a School of Sustainability will be among the topics discussed at the first Discover Sustainability Symposium, hosted by the Office of Sustainability and the Office of the Provost at New Mexico State University.

The symposium will begin with a poster session at 3 p.m. Feb. 23 at Domenici Hall. Guest speakers will begin taking the stage at 3:30 p.m. in the Yates Theater. The symposium is free and open to the public.

Speakers include Mary Lucero, a systems biologist and researcher with End-O-Fite Enterprises; Claire Catlett of Stream Dynamics in Silver City, N.M.; Lisa Grayshield, an associate professor for curriculum and instruction with the NMSU College of Education; and David Boje, a Regents professor with the College of Business.

Lucero will speak about soils and Catlett will speak about water and stormwater systems. Grayshield will give a presentation about our connections to Mother Earth, and Boje is scheduled to speak about developing a School of Sustainability.

joni newcomer, manager of environmental policy and sustainability at NMSU, said the symposium is modeled after the TED Talks. NMSU Executive Vice President and Provost Dan Howard will give an introduction at the beginning of the symposium.

“We want people to walk away with an understanding that sustainability is more than just recycling. We want to expand their horizons of thinking,” newcomer said.
