NMSU to host 3rd Aggie Family Bike event

In an effort to encourage a safe and healthy approach toward bike riding, the New Mexico State University Environmental Health and Safety Department will host its third Aggie Family Bike event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Aggie Express Community Center on the corner of Stanley Drive and Williams Avenue.

The fall Aggie Family Bike event will take place Saturday, Oct. 24.

The event will take place following the NMSU Homecoming parade, which attendees are invited to join. Participants will be able to enjoy free smoothies from a bicycle blender, learn how to change a tire, paint and listen to music while their children ride on the course set up for them and learn about bike safety.

“The purpose of this event is to see more families riding together safely and enjoying themselves,” project coordinator Jamie Lakey said. “The most fulfilling thing is when I see the change that has been created by the event.”

Lakey hopes the event will help students and their families learn to ride in a safer manner and handle minor repairs on their own.

“Riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to spend time with the family and exercise at the same time,” she said.

The Las Cruces Codes Enforcement will hold a bike rodeo for children, focusing on safety in turning and riding on busy streets.

With the help of local donors, there will be a raffle taking place every 30 minutes throughout the event.
