NMSU Police Department to celebrate K-9 with retirement ceremony

The New Mexico State University Police Department is hosting a retirement ceremony at 3:30 p.m. today at the departmentís headquarters to honor K-9 officer Raven. She is one of three K-9ís with NMSUPD to specialize in explosive detection.

A Belgian Malinois-German Shepherd cross, Raven has worked with the NMSUPD for three years, and she inspected buildings and venues across campus including Aggie Memorial Stadium and Pan American Center. She also has been a regional asset and assisted with bomb threats in Dona Ana County.

With Ravenís retirement, NMSUPD has another K-9 in training, Roxy, a Belgian Malanois. Roxy is a one-year old and expected to be working in three to six months. Raven is retiring due to medical reasons and will be adopted by her handler, Sgt. Craig Ryan

ďItís bittersweet that Ravenís retiring,Ē said Ryan. ďIím going to miss our working relationship, but the fact that I get to adopt her and let her be a pet is very exciting for both of us.Ē

Jacob Ballard from the Dona Ana County Sheriffís Department donated Raven to NMSU.
