NMSU, New Mexico Vine and Wine Society to host Central New Mexico Grape Day

The New Mexico Vine and Wine Society and New Mexico State University have teamed up for the 2014 Central New Mexico Grape Day, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at Silver Crane Vineyards in Los Lunas, N.M.

The event will feature presentations focused on the small grape-grower.

Topics to be covered include “Vineyard cover crops and soil fertility” by John Idowu, NMSU Extension agronomist; “Site selection and economics of planting a new vineyard” by Bernd Maier, NMSU Extension viticulturist; “Northern New Mexico grape variety selection” by Kevin Lombard, NMSU associate professor at the Agricultral Science Center at Farmington; and Jeremiah Baumgartel, winemaker at Ponderosa Valley Vineyards and Winery will discuss “Pre-harvest operations for wine production.”

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; first presentation will begin at 9 a.m.

The New Mexico Wine and Vine Society Central New Mexico Grape Day is free for current Vine and Wine members; the public may attend for $10 per person. Lunch is included and will be served after the morning sessions. A question-and-answer session will follow lunch.
