NMSU Extension Specialist will host workshop on turfgrass irrigation
Bernd Leinauer, New Mexico State University’s turfgrass Extension specialist will give a workshop titled “How to perform an irrigation audit for turfgrass areas.” The workshop will focus on how to conduct an irrigation audit and eliminate water waste. Participants will learn firsthand how to conduct an irrigation audit, how to use the Internet to determine the amount of water necessary to irrigate the turf area, and how to use all the gathered information for appropriately scheduling irrigation. Outdoor irrigation accounts for a large portion of residential potable water use during the summer but irrigation is necessary in order to keep our grass and landscape plants alive and green over the summer. An annual average of 8 inches of rain is not sufficient for most plants to survive. Despite the drought and the considerable amount of water used for watering plants, many turfgrass irrigation systems are inefficient and more than half of the water used may not reach the intended area and is wasted.
The workshop will be held in Mesilla Farms at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2.
The workshop is free. Participants must register with the Dona Ana County Extension Office located at 530 North Church St., in Las Cruces. People can call the Extension office at 575-525-6652.
