SANTA FE - Spring is just around the corner and fruit trees will be blossoming soon. In preparation for the upcoming season, New Mexico fruit growers will meet at the annual fruit growers workshop, 8 a.m. to noon Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Santa Fe County Fair building, 3229 Rodeo Road, in Santa Fe.
The free event is sponsored by New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service and the New Mexico Department of Agriculture marketing division.
The session will feature various aspects of orchard management. Tessa Grasswitz, NMSU Extension integrated pest management specialist, will provide an update on fruit pest management research she is conducting. Shengrui Yao, NMSU Extension fruit specialist will speak on developing a plan for an operation. Joanie Quinn, NMDA organic commodity advisor, and Chris Bassett of Freshies Farms will discuss organic apple production. Patrick Torres, NMSU Santa Fe Extension program director, will discuss good agriculture practices. A presentation on soil, water and leaf analysis will also be presented by Cheryl Kent, Bernalillo County Extension horticulturalist.
