Short story author to read at NMSU Sept. 10

Thom Jones, author of the short story collections "The Pugilist at Rest," "Cold Snap" and "Sonny Liston was a Friend of Mine" will read from his stories Sept. 10 as part of La Sociedad Para Las Artes Fall 1999 Reading Series at New Mexico State University.
The reading begins at 7:30 p.m. in NMSU's Hardman Hall, Room 106. Michael Yang, an NMSU graduate student majoring in English with an emphasis in fiction writing, will read from his thesis.
Jones' fiction has appeared in "The New Yorker," "GQ," "The Paris Review," "Mirabella," "Harper's" and "Esquire." His stories also appear regularly in "Best American Short Stories" and one was included in "The Best American Short Stories of the Century."
Jones won the 1993 O. Henry Prize and was a finalist for the National Book Award.
Other readings for the fall include: author and poet Miriam Sagan on Sept. 24; Rodney Jones, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, on Oct. 8; authors Don Kurtz and Valerie Martinez participate in the "Share Our Strength" reading Oct. 22 at the Las Cruces Court Youth Center; and author Richard Russo on Nov. 12.
